Effective Study Habits for College Students
Developing good study habits can be one of the best investments of your time in terms of preparing to go back to school or improving your grades while you are in school. The best part is that if you truly want to improve your learning process, you can do it with just a few basic techniques like time management, organization and prioritization.
Dedicating a specific time and place can make all the difference. Students who don’t practice this technique tend to be more stressed about homework and studying because they are never sure how or where they are going to study. Having a set time and place to study alleviates all of those stressors and allows you to focus on the material you need to cover. Prioritize your time, no matter how much you might wish differently, there are only so many hours in a day you can devote to studying. Start with the more difficult tasks and material. This helps you through the study session, so towards the end of it you’re working on the easier things that are easier to understand.
Only you know what works for you, so find an environment that’s good for you and can help you stay focused on your work. Nothing makes a class more enjoyable then walking in with a good understanding of the material before the instructor even opens their mouth to speak. Bring your reading notes to class for questions or comments on the material. Participate in the class discussion whenever possible, ask open ended questions and join the discussions. Being involved in the class discussion, you will be paying attention to what the instructor and others are talking about. One of the best study habits someone can have would be to not be afraid to ask for help, sooner or later everyone runs into a course that they just struggle with; your teachers and instructors are always willing to help their students succeed.
