Summer is here. The days are longer, the kids are off of school, and families are away on their long-awaited vacations. While we are big advocates of taking needed breaks (check out our post Time Out! Why Taking Time Out for Yourself is Important for more information on this), it is also crucial to stay motivated when you working to achieve your goals. At Lamson, we know this can be tough. That is why we’ve compiled this list of ways to stay motivated this summer.
Enjoy small summer pleasures.
It’s hot in the summer. What’s the best remedy when it’s hot? Ice cream! Or perhaps a quick dip in the community pool! Do not underestimate these small summer pleasures. It can be tough to balance these joys of summer when you are trying to pursue your professional goals, but the keyword here is “balance”. A bit of indulgence can go a long way when you are trying to balance work and pleasure.
Set reasonable goals and reward yourself.
Make a list of your goals and put them in the order that they are important to you. After achieving a goal, make a point to reward yourself. Take that weekend trip you’ve been thinking about, or take yourself out to a nice dinner. Upon achieving another goal, reward yourself with another treat. There is no reason you can’t let off steam when public holidays or end-of-programs do come along. Oh, and did we mention ice cream?
Create your own quitting time.
There are many tasks that may take up your day, from work to school to caring for your family. With all of this going on it may feel like you are working around the clock. However, it is healthy (and necessary!) to carve out some leisure time. It’s ok to tell yourself, ‘Sunday is a family day,’ or ‘After 8pm, no more work.’ Creating your own quitting time helps you get the rest and relaxation you need to make it through the summer at the top of your game.
Dress the part.
It can be tempting to dress more casually in the summer months. Warmer weather and those laid back summer vibes can make it difficult to put on your stiff work attire. However, there is a correlation between how we dress and the way we work. So dress the part for your field of study and keep your motivation up during the summer.
Stick to your vision board.
Write your vision down. Create a collage. Tell a loved one. Print out a picture that represents what you are striving for and post it next to your bathroom mirror. These are just a few ways that can help make your vision a little more tangible. The next step, especially now in the middle of the summer, is to return to your vision. Read it over again. Imagine where the path you are on will take you. No matter what, don’t lose sight of your vision on these long, dreamy summer days!
One distinct advantage of summer is that the extra daylight gives us more time to accomplish all we need to get done, including finding time for enjoyment. So, use the above recommendations to your advantage and conquer your career training program through the summer.
At Lamson in San Antonio, Texas, we know your time and energy are valuable. We are committed to helping you use your time wisely and be on your way to making a true difference, especially through these summer months.
