What does a Medical Assistant do?
Medical assistants complete administrative and clinical tasks in the offices of physicians, hospitals, and other healthcare facilities. Medical Assistants perform an assortment of clinical and clerical duties, including routine tasks and procedures such as measuring patients’ vital signs, administering medications and injections, recording information in medical recordkeeping systems, preparing and handling medical instruments and supplies, and collecting and preparing specimens of bodily fluids and tissues for laboratory testing. Administrative duties include answering telephones, greeting patients, updating and filing patients’ medical records, filling out insurance forms, handling correspondence, scheduling appointments, arranging for hospital admission and laboratory services, and handling billing and bookkeeping. Medical Assistants also act as a patient coordinator by providing a means of communication between patients, doctors and other health care providers.

Medical Assistants work in clinics, hospitals and private labs. Allied Health Professionals, including Medical Assistants, work in every town, every city, and every part of the country.
What is the job outlook for Medical Assistants?
The Healthcare industry in the United States is booming! According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor and Statistics, employment in healthcare occupations is projected to grow 18 percent from 2016 to 2026, much faster than the average for all occupations. This growth will add about 2.4 million new jobs, more than are projected for any of the other occupational groups. This growth is mainly due to an aging population, leading to greater demand for healthcare services and the professionals that provide them.

Lamson’s Medical Assistant program trains students to fill a variety of positions in the medical field, including as a Medical Assistant, a Clinical or Administrative Assistant and a Medical Receptionist. Lamson’s program provides hands-on training so that students may practice in real life situations, rather than learning just from textbooks. Lamson students learn to perform basic laboratory procedures, as well as how to assist physicians in medical office examinations. Lamson graduates are also prepared to work in the front office of a medical office, performing administrative duties such as bookkeeping, record management, appointment scheduling, insurance, and medical practice management.
Lamson graduates will be prepared to obtain the Medical Assistant National Certification from the NCCT.
